Chartpaper — Privacy Policy

Chartpaper is a free classroom activity board built and run by one public-school teacher. This page describes exactly what the app stores, what it doesn't, and what leaves it. It is written to be read, not to be skimmed past.
The short version
- Students do not have accounts. No student email addresses, no student passwords, no student profiles.
- The only personal data a student provides is whatever name they type to join a board — which can be a first name, initials, or a nickname the teacher assigns.
- There is no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking of any kind. No Google Analytics, no pixels, no third-party trackers, no cookies for tracking.
- We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with anyone, and we never will.
- Teachers sign in with Google. Students never do.
What we store about teachers
Signing in is optional — you can use Chartpaper without an account, and your boards stay on your own device. If you do sign in with Google, we receive and store your email address and the name on your Google account. That's it. We do not receive your Google password, and we do not request access to your Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or contacts.
Signed in, we also store:
- Your boards — titles and contents, so they follow you between devices.
- Class rosters, if you make them — a class name and the list of student names you typed.
- Share links you create, and a picture of the board at the moment you shared it.
- Live room codes, so a room can be rejoined.
What we store about students
Only two things, and only while an activity is running:
- The name typed on the join screen. Teachers who want less identifying information can ask students to use first names only, initials, or assigned nicknames — the app does not check or care.
- What the student adds to the board — sticky notes, drawings, poll votes. A poll vote is stored with the name that was typed, so the class can see who voted for what.
Students are never asked for an email address, a phone number, a birthdate, a school, or any account credential. Nothing a student does is tracked across boards, across sessions, or over time.
Board images are publicly readable
Please read this one. Images added to a board — photos, uploads, and the preview picture attached to a share link — are stored at long random web addresses that are readable by anyone who has the address. They are not listed anywhere, not searchable, and not guessable, but they are not password-protected either.
Treat a board image the way you would treat something pinned to a hallway display. Don't put student work you wouldn't post publicly, identifiable photographs of children, or anything confidential into a board image.
Sharing
Boards are private by default. There is no public gallery, no search, no profiles, no feed, and no way to browse other people's boards. A board becomes visible to other people only when you create a share link, and that link is a long unguessable code.
Share links expire automatically after about 30 days. Your board stays in your account; re-sharing makes a fresh link. You can revoke a link at any time.
AI features
Some optional features — drafting a board from a description, and analyzing a finished board — send text to Anthropic's API to generate a response. These run only when you choose to use them.
- Only text is sent. Images on your board are never sent to the AI.
- Your email address and account identity are not sent.
- When a board is shared, its text may be automatically checked for content that isn't appropriate for a classroom.
What's stored on your own device
Chartpaper keeps your boards, your images, and small preferences (like the name you last used to join a room) in your browser's local storage on your own device. Clearing your browser data removes them. These are not tracking cookies and are not sent to any third party.
Security and abuse prevention
To stop spam and abuse, the service counts recent requests. This temporarily records an IP address alongside a counter. These records are automatically deleted after one day and are not used to build a profile of anyone or linked to board content.
Keeping and deleting data
- Your boards are kept until you delete them. Deleting a board also revokes its share links.
- Share links expire after about 30 days.
- Abuse-prevention records are deleted after one day.
- Your account: email glenmeinsch@gmail.com and everything associated with your account will be deleted. No forms, no retention period, no argument.
Who else touches the data
We use as few outside services as possible. They are:
- Supabase — stores accounts, boards, and images.
- Vercel — serves the website.
- Google — only to let teachers sign in.
- Anthropic — only for the optional AI features above.
Data is stored in the United States. There is no one else.
Children
Chartpaper is designed to be used by students under a teacher's direction, which is why it deliberately collects almost nothing about them and requires no student account. Creating an account — which only a teacher needs to do — requires being 13 or older.

Changes
Chartpaper is an active experiment and this page will change as it does. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version. If a change meaningfully affects what is collected, signed-in users will be told in the app rather than quietly.
